WEEK 3: Ron Mueck's sculpture and Humanism

1. Muck's sculpture is described as 'hyper-real'. Define the meaning of this term and apply it to    his work.

The term 'Hyper-realism' is realism in art characterized by depiction of real life in a way that is beyond real or reality itself.

Ron "Mueck was well known for his super realistic sculptures.
His sculptures were so life like that the viewer often struggles to determine if his works are real or not.
Apart from his sculptures replicating reality, it portrays the cycle of life and death of the human body.

2. Mueck is not interested in making life size sculpture. Find out why he is more interested
in working with the scale of the figure which is not life size, and mention 2 works which use
scale that is either larger or smaller than life.

"I never made life-size figures because it never seemed to be interesting. We meet life-size people every day"
Mueck's intention was to magnify the physical and emotional aura of his figures.

Pregnant woman is a sculpture portraying  motherhood, with reference to fertility, birth, and to life itself. Muck's ability to portray the significance and strength of a pregnant woman, as well as her vulnerability and emotional intensity, creates a powerful bond between the viewer and the work.

The "'woman with sticks" again shows a very high quality of detail, but with a play in the scale of the figure.

3.Define Renaissance Humanism , and analyze the term in order to apply it to an example of Mueck's work. Note that the contemporary definition of Humanism is much broader than the Renaissance definition.

Renaissance humanism is not the study of humans, its a system of thought that considers human beings as able to decide their own morals , thruth's and behaviours. It was often used in the 15th century to describe a teacher or student of classical literature.

4. Research and discuss one of Mueck's sculptures that you might find challenging or exciting to experience in an art gallery. Describe the work, upload an image of the work, and explain your personal response to the work. Comment on other student blogs to develop the discussion around the variety of our own personal and individual responses to art and design.

I personally like this sculpture it looks very intriguing .A new born baby generally signifies happiness or a new beginning , but this sculpture looks like the baby is not completely born.
